UK pubs closed at a rate of 52 per week in the first half of the year - a third more than the same period in 2008 the British Beer & Pub Association said. Local pubs were the most vulnerable as communities were hit by the fallout of the economic downturn. And branded pubs and cafe-style bars were opening at a rate of two a week, according to the report.

Bernard Madoff has been given prison sentence of 150 years for masterminding a massive fraud that robbed investors of $65bn. The sentence, which means Madoff will spend the rest of his life in jail, was greeted with cheers and applause in the packed courtroom. Judge Chin gave Madoff the maximum sentence on all 11 charges, which included securities fraud and money laundering. Why didn't they give them a death penalty??

British Airways is asking thousands of staff to work for free, for up to one month, to help the airline survive. The appeal, sent by e-mail to more than 30,000 workers in the UK, asks them to volunteer for between one week and one month's unpaid leave, or unpaid work. BA's chief executive Willie Walsh has already agreed to work unpaid in July, forgoing his month's salary of £61,000 (interesting).

There is not a single day that I don't hear about current economic crisis. With several companies who fired their workers, we see more and more people unemployed and some of them loosing their house. They can do nothing rather than suffering.
